One of the best things about summer is spending hot summer days in a swimming pool. Unfortunately, you have to tackle chlorine damage.
Chlorine can strip the natural oils from a child’s hair, making it dry and brittle. Plus, without those natural oils to protect the hair, the intense UV rays of summer can do even more damage. To make matters worse, children will often spend hours in the pool, only coming out for bathroom breaks and snacks. This means that their hair is literally being soaked in chlorine all day long.
Parents Can Take a Few Simple Steps to Prevent Chlorine Damage.
Chlorine damages hair by stripping it of its natural oils, leaving it dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. For lighter-colored hair, it can also cause a greenish tint. The best way to protect your child’s hair is to create a barrier to prevent chlorine absorption before swimming and to remove any residue immediately after.

Before swimming
Wet hair with fresh water. Hair acts like a sponge, and if it is already saturated with clean water, it will absorb less chlorinated pool water.
Apply a protective layer. A pre-swim leave-in conditioner or a natural oil can create a barrier that seals the hair cuticle, preventing chlorine from entering.

Use a swim cap. This is the most effective method for protecting hair, as it prevents almost all direct contact with the chlorinated water.
Braid long hair. For children with longer hair, braiding it can help prevent tangles and make it easier to manage after a swim.

After swimming
Rinse hair immediately. As soon as your child is out of the pool, rinse their hair thoroughly with clean, fresh water to wash away as many chemicals as possible.
Use a clarifying or swimmer’s shampoo. These are specially formulated to remove chlorine buildup and neutralize its effects. Look for one that contains nourishing ingredients to restore moisture.
Good options: Fairy Tales Lifeguard Clarifying Shampoo, or Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Hair Remedy.
Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. After shampooing, apply a hydrating conditioner to replenish moisture and smooth the hair shaft. For a deep treatment, you can leave the conditioner on for a few extra minutes.
Tip: Rinsing the final conditioner with cool water can help seal the hair cuticle.
Limit heat styling. Since chlorine is already drying, avoid using heat tools like blow dryers or flat irons, and let the hair air-dry instead.
