Static Electricity is a common issue, especially for children’s delicate hair. The best way to deal with flyaways is to ensure the hair has sufficient moisture.
An imbalance in electrical charges in the hair strands causes static hair.

This imbalance can occur due to several factors:
- Friction: Rubbing hair against objects, such as clothing, brushes, or hats, can generate static electricity.
- Dryness: Hair that is dry or lacks moisture is more susceptible to static. This is because dry hair has fewer electrons, making it easier for positive charges to accumulate.
- Low humidity: In dry environments with low humidity, the air cannot absorb the excess electrons, leading to static buildup.
- Heat styling: Using heat tools like blow dryers, flat irons, or curling irons can strip hair of its natural moisture, increasing static.
- Chemical treatments: Hair treatments that contain harsh chemicals can damage the hair’s cuticle, making it more prone to static.
- Synthetic fabrics: Wearing clothes or accessories made of synthetic materials, such as nylon or polyester, can generate static electricity.
Static Electricity

Use detanglers everywhere! Spray on wet or dry hair, in hats, jacket hoods, car seats, etc. We carry a wide variety of detanglers, such as Original Sprout Miracle Detangler, Paul Mitchell Taming Spray, and Circle of Friends.
Rinse your child’s hair with lukewarm water, never with hot water. Using too hot water on your hair will cause it to dry out. Blast it with some cold water at the end to hold extra shine in your hair.
Run a dryer sheet gently on your child’s hair. Before you leave the house, put a few sheets in your bag if your child’s hair decides to act up later on! Don’t coat the hair TOO much, though, just run it gently on the top of your baby’s hair.
Use wooden or natural bristle brushes and combs on your hair. Synthetic brushes hold more of a static charge.
Tips to Avoid Static Electricity
To avoid static electricity in a child’s delicate hair, focus on hair care products that help neutralize negative charges. Adding positively charged amino acids to your negatively charged hair may help prevent static electricity from building up in your hair.
Static is caused by a lack of moisture and friction from specific brushes, fabrics, or dry air.
Hair care routine
Moisturize hair regularly. Hydration is the best defense against static. Always use a full-strength conditioner after shampooing, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. For extra moisture, use a leave-in conditioner spray on damp hair.
Avoid over-washing. Shampooing too often can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and increased static. Consider spacing out wash days or using a co-wash on in-between days.
Use a gentle drying method. Instead of rubbing hair vigorously with a towel, which causes friction, gently pat it dry with a soft cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel. Air-drying is the gentlest option.
Opt for an ionic hair dryer. If you must blow-dry, use an ionic model on the lowest heat setting. Ionic dryers neutralize the electric charge that causes static and frizz.
Hair accessories and quick fixes
Swap out plastic brushes. Plastic combs and brushes can create friction and generate an electrical charge. Switch to a wooden or metal comb, or a brush with natural boar bristles, which help distribute natural oils and are gentler on the hair.
Purchase or make a DIY anti-static spray. Create your own by mixing a small amount of liquid conditioner with water in a spray bottle. Lightly spritz it on the hair to calm flyaways without making it greasy.
Use a dryer sheet as a substitute in a pinch. For a quick fix, gently rub an unscented dryer sheet over your child’s hair to neutralize the static charge. You can also wipe down the hairbrush with it before use.
Use a touch of lotion. If you are out and about, rub a small amount of unscented moisturizer into your hands and gently smooth it over your child’s hair to tame flyaways
